Looking for a fresh way to reinforce fraction skills in your classroom or at home? Grab a set of dominoes! They’re a fantastic hands-on tool for reviewing everything from equivalent fractions to fraction operations, making math feel more like play than work. Perfect for independent practice, math centers, or partner activities, dominoes add an element of fun while deepening understanding.

Let’s explore some creative ways to use dominoes for fraction review! And don’t forget to check out our Domino Fraction Review download for ready-to-use handouts that go along with each activity.

Math Centers: Equivalent Fractions

Students select two dominoes and position them so the smaller number is on top, creating two fractions. Using any strategy they prefer, they determine whether the fractions are equivalent and record their findings in a journal or on paper.

Comparing Fractions “War”

This game brings a competitive twist to fraction practice!

  • Each student draws a domino and places it with the smaller number on top.

  • Both players write down their fractions and compare them.

  • The student with the larger fraction wins both dominoes.

  • Play continues until one player runs out of dominoes or after a set number of rounds!

This is such a fun way to build confidence in comparing fractions while keeping students engaged.

Simplifying Fractions

Give students dominoes that create fractions capable of being reduced.

  • They position the domino so the smaller number is on top and write the fraction down.

  • Then, they simplify it to its lowest terms.

  • Record the answers on a worksheet or in their journal

Converting Improper Fractions & Mixed Numbers

Want students to master improper fractions and mixed numbers? Try this:

  • Students draw a domino and flip it so the larger number is on top, creating an improper fraction.

  • They divide to convert it into a mixed number.

  • Record the result and repeat with new dominoes!

Fraction Operations: Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide

For practicing fraction operations, you can adjust the level to match your students! Pre-select the dominos if you want your students to practice only adding and subtracting with like denominators, or use dominos that only show simplified fractions if you want to keep it simple. To level it up, select more complex fractions for an extra challenge!

  • Students draw two dominoes and arrange them with the smaller number on top.

  • They perform the given operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division).

  • Record answers

For extra flexibility, our Domino Fraction Review handouts provide separate practice pages for each operation!
